Approach
My approach to treatment is informed by classical perspectives and new developments in contemporary psychoanaltyic practice and research. I am also very much influenced by current research in neuroscience, clinical science and attachment and how these findings are incorporated into clinical practice.
My approach has a deep respect and appreciation for each person's unique life experience, some of which may be unknown to the person. It focuses on the deeper causes of emotional and relationship distress to help a person to think about and manage difficulties more constructively.
Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy use some key assumptions to help people overcome difficulties in living:
- People are motivated by what they are aware of in themselves, and as importantly, by what they are not aware of, or can't know.
- Problems with important people in one's past are repeated in present relationships, most often without knowing that this is occurring.
- The relationship with the psychotherapist is the key to working through emotional and relational difficulties.
- Development never stops and continues from infancy, through childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age.
